This year, like in the past few years, the construction industry in Kenya is on a sustained high. The government has heightened its commitment to major infrastructural projects as evidenced by the launch of the annuity financing model for construction of 10,000 kilometers of roads and the recent decision by Treasury to give a cash injection to the Konza Technology City, the Lamu Port Corridor and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) projects. These projects are expected to take the biggest chunk of the KSh 393 billion the state intends to spend on infrastructure, energy and information technology in 2015/16. In another report from the Kenyan government, Treasury economic secretary Geoffrey Mwau said by fiscal year 2016/17, the economy could grow by 7.3 pc driven mainly by projects such as the SGR and energy generation.

In the upcoming issue, Construction East Africa has lined up for you various features such as the new SuperSport studios in East Africa, the M-pesa Academy initiative and the Kenya Railways Slum relocation project. The cover story explores how Upper Hill is emerging as Nairobi’s Metropolis. We have also introduced new columns such as environment watch, focusing on the impact construction activities have on the environment. Dispute Resolution is also a new column that will highlight possible areas of dispute and resolution in the construction industry. For the sport lover, we tell you what to look for when looking for a golf club membership.
